the powder room

The Powder Room makeover was not planned. I knew I wanted to change the look of it but didn’t put too much thought about what direction to go. One day I just decided to paint it a different color. We had some leftover paint from the Master Bedroom, enough to cover the tiny room. I then purchased a couple of shelves and start thinking about accessorizing. I had some things around the house that I put to good use: a couple of glass vases, some candles and towels I got on sale from Pottery Barn and some toiletries we “got” from The Ritz.  It looked nice but still something was missing. I remembered the stripped wall in our boy’s room and how fun it looks. So I proceeded to paint some white stripes, with some more leftover paint. The result? In my opinion a new, more sophisticated space. The tiny room feels airy and fresh and believe it or not, bigger!  I bought some more guest towels and framed some pictures from our trips to Paris and Lima to complete the look. There are still things I want to change, like painting the mirror (or replace it) and upgrading the light fixture. But that will be a future project. For now I’m happy with the way it turned out.

I am obsessed with stripes on the walls. The colors are such a compliment to your bathroom that it makes it look so much bigger. I love all the details!

I love it – the stripes give it enough edge! I also love your shelves – they are just the simple clean lines I’ve been looking for. Can you give the details on where you got them?

Love the results! I’d love to try the stripes in my own bathroom and was wondering if you could tell me exactly which colors you used? There are a thousand different shades of grey out there! I’d love some direction!

      Hi Becky,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I know what you mean. It can be overwhelming with all that many options out there. In this case I used Benjamin Moore Nimbus Grey (2135-50). We had used it in our Master Bedroom and just happened to have some leftover paint. The other color is a White. I don’t know exactly which shade. It was more leftover paint. I have to be honest and say that for the most part we don’t try the colors first. We usually choose a color we like from the deck and go ahead and paint. Sometimes we are lucky and love the color. A couple of times not so much.

Love the Stripes..Im wanting to do the same thing in my guest bathroom. May I ask how many inches tall are the grey/white stripes? Im having a hard time deciding how tall I want each of the stripes, and I really like the idea of one smaller/larger than the other..
    Thank you for your time.

Thanks! The grey stripes are 13 in. and the white ones are 7 1/2 in. I wanted the top stripe to align with the door and window heads. That determined the larger witdh. I wanted three big stripes. So I substracted 13 in. x 3 from the total height of my wall and whatever was left I divided by two for the narrower stripe. Hope that helps!

Love the stripes! This is probably a dumb question for DIY’ers but is there a special trick to paint the stripes so perfect and straight? Thanks!
